![]() ![]() Owens has performed at many of Austin’s clubs, such as Speakeasy, Antone’s, Sullivan’s, the Flamingo Cantina and Reed’s Jazz Club. Since then, Owens has played for various jazz groups, including the King Valentine’s Octet, the Texas Eastside Kings, the Night of Cookers and Concerto Grosso and the Texas Trumpets. In his pursuit to become a professional trumpeter, he moved to Austin in 1996. In 1994, the band went on a trip to Europe and played at both the North Sea and Montreux Jazz Festivals. After, he enrolled in Southwest Texas State and joined the University’s jazz band. During this time, Owens began to play in clubs in the Dallas and Fort Worth area. The famous Roy Hargrove got Owens interested in playing jazz music professionally.Īfter Owens graduated high school, he attended Weatherford Community College for two years. Many students would later become professional jazz musicians, like pianist Fred Sanders, saxophonists Keith Anderson and Keith Loftis, and trumpeters Whitney Russel and Roy Hargrove. When Owens was eight years old, he began playing the trumpet. His mother, Mary Owens, loved to sing and his father, John Owens, was an avid fan of blues music. We first came across Victor and Gustavo at the Chapel Allerton Arts Jazz Sunday in 2022 and they blew us away with their mix of classic Brazilian tunes alongside a number of original latin jazz compositions.Owens was born on Novemin Dallas, Texas. Taking inspiration from global folk music, the band are melodically driven with a modal and groove based focus. Miles Pillinger is a drummer studying at Leeds Conservatoire – he’s been in many bands for JazzLeeds over the last three years notably when we were keeping the music live outside at Seven Arts courtyard during the Covid crisis. Her Big Band has always sold out at our Seven Arts venue. Kate has worked in a wide variety of stars in the music industry most recently with DJ Judge Jules. Kate Peters and her Quartet perform with an exciting set with some jazzy takes on some classic numbers. Jazz singer and educator Tessa Smith has been rehearsing choirs for many years – the JazzVoices choir is our community based choir, singing jazz blues and gospel tunes for fun. Dave Evans leads a group of young musicians from the school to perform at Leeds Jazz Festival – come and cheer them on!. JazzLeeds have been working with Roundhay School in a project to introduce young people to improvisation, groove playing, playing by ear and from memory – skills and creative practices that are part of Jazz.
